Don’t just observe…

TAKE PART!

Guided walks with a qualified local guide Danilo Giusti is passionate about the valley, its ancient mule tracks, the old ways of life in the area, and the flora and fauna that inhabit it. What better way to get to know the valley intimately than to spend a few hours walking with Danilo and benefiting from his extensive knowledge, whether in the shaded chestnut woods of the Valleriana or even beyond if you are after something more challenging. Danilo runs organised group walks but can also arrange something tailored to your particular interests and abilities. The shepherd of Medicina Stefano is an agricultural expert, trainer and educator specializing in creative events in the heart of nature. From an early age he wanted to live immersed in the woods and with animals. After having built up considerable experience in both the dairy and creative sectors, he decided to become a mountain farmer/shepherd. He has developed wine-tasting experiences and educational events for all ages in close contact with the forest. Dinner under the stars For a unique and unforgettable evening, immerse yourself in the fairytale environment built by shepherd Stefano and his wife, Giuditta, in a candlelit clearing at the edge of the wood above Medicina. In this magical spot under the stars, you will be able to taste the farm’s products, roasted meats, cold cuts and much more. Giuditta and Stefano will welcome you with an aperitif under the cherry tree at the ‘Bosco delle Fate’ (‘fairytale wood’), following which you can tuck into a delicious spread of local foods all served on beautiful hand carved wooden cutting boards. Truly a magical experience. Walking with the flock For another unique experience, you can take a walk with the shepherd and his flock. Guiditta and Stefano will take you to visit the sheepfold, from where you will start a walk through the woods and pastures with the flock. Along the way you will be able to admire the chestnut trees and wonderful panoramic views of the splendid valley. On arriving at the hermitage of Sant'Anna a rustic brunch brunch will be served. After a bit of relaxation you will walk back to the farm where, at the sheepfold, the experience culminates with a cheese workshop and a tasting of the farm’s cheeses accompanied by home produced compotes and jams, bread baked in a wood- fired oven, and good wine. In this unique experience, you will witness the care and workmanship that goes into these handmade products and savour the unique tastes in a magical and welcoming environment. Guided mountain bike rides The Valleriana has its own dedicated group of mountain bikers known as ‘i nani svizzeri’ or the ‘Swiss dwarves’ - they derive the ‘Swiss’ part of their name from the fact that the valley is also known as the ‘Svizzera Pesciatina’  (‘Swiss Pescia’), thanks to the Genevan writer Jean Charles Léonard Simonde de Sismondi, who believed this particular area of Tuscany resembled the Swiss Alps. As a group, the mountain bikers spend much of their time systematically cleaning up old and long forgotten mule tracks, plotting the GPS co-oridnates of the tracks, and of course riding them on their bikes. One of the group will be happy to take you on a guided ride along the ancient mule tracks hidden away in the woods and can even arrange bike hire, including electrically assisted versions to take some of the strain. Art lessons with Kelly Borsheim Although not Italian, Kelly (who comes from the US) has made her home in these hills after spending time in Florence working as a street artist and has a true passion for the valley. Kelly is a very accomplished artist, whose stunning works range from oil paintings and charcoal drawings to statues in bronze and stone! She offers painting lessons at her home, which can include lunch. Geocaching tour of the 10 villages of the Valleriana As of 2019 you can now follow a Geocaching tour of the valley. This is a great activity that will help you explore all ten of the hilltop villages known historically as ‘castles’ because of their high defensive positions that saw centuries of fighting between the powers of Florence, Lucca and Pisa. Wine tasting brought to you! Francesco is a local sommelier who can bring a wine-tasting evening directly to wherever you are staying. He is happy to personalise the evening to suit taste and budget if required.   Disc Golf in Pietrabuona Ever played frisbee? Ever played golf? What about disc golf? Disc golf is a sport that has international appeal and is growing rapidly in popularity - and Pietrabuona has its own course, hidden away up amongst the olive trees on the hills above the village.
